Stay in this icon in Lightening Ridge you wont be disappointed. A castle of character and charm. Imagine sleeping in room with car doors and corrugated iron curtains. A very interesting large abode with Peter nearby a living legend of opal mining and the Lightening Ridge Community. We are a couple of Canberra dudes and no other stay place could be anywhere near the real heart of Lightening Ridge. Chat to Peter is a must and you'll soon understand what I mean. Enjoy..... Graham

A trip to Lightning Ridge is really a unique and wonderful experience. Staying at the castle was just the icing on the cake. It's in amongst the diggings but spotlessly clean and makes you feel like you're in your very own outback story. I will recommend a visit to anyone who will listen. Loved every minute of it Thanks so much.

This place is an unconventional gem. The hosts are so welcoming and knowledgeable about the area and it was lovely meeting and talking to them. A different quirk with every glance. We could see past the obvious flaws in the accommodation - this place may not be everyone’s cup of tea - the bathroom isn’t the best but at least there are bore baths very close by. We were so pleased to have stayed here - a place we will surely never forget!

The only thing I was disappointed in was the fact I couldn't stay longer. Lightening ridge and the surrounds has so much to offer. The hosts were great, gave the feeling that nothing would've been to much trouble. They left local directories of the areas points of interest and were happy to chat and share local knowledge. The house itself was very clean and comfortable. Very quaint with cute little surprises around the place in its design. The castles location allows guests a snippet of a real life outback opal experience. Absolute highlight for me was definitely the turret to star gaze from. Great value for money, looking forward to going back.

FAQ
Is there WiFi?

There is no wifi. The ideal place for disconnecting!

Is the Ridge Castle air-conditioned?

Though we are on solar power, it is not strong enough to run the split system air-conditioner. We can turn the generator on though each night for 3 hours to provide some warmth in the lounge room. Warm clothes will be needed inside during winter!

Do we need to bring linen?
No. The Queen size bed is fully made up. A spare blanket and doona is also available if you really feel the cold.

We also include pillows, towels and bathmats.

Do you accept pets?
Sorry, but no pets are permitted.
What cooking facilities are there?

The kitchen has a microwave, fridge and enough kitchenware to cook up a small banquet.

Can we use the wood-fired stove inside?

The wood fired stoves and water systems not to be used.

What is the bathroom like?

There is an internal basic bathroom with hot water for the shower or bath.

Is there a working mine on-site?

There is a working mine on site which you cannot go down. (We will be on site mining however so will be more than happy to show you any of our finds! If not, you can see all the dirt we dig up instead….).

Is there mobile reception?

At the Ridge Castle, as in the whole of Lightning Ridge, mobile reception can be spotty. In our experience, Telstra has good reception. Optus comes and goes. Other carriers generally doubtful.

Can we have a BBQ or open fire?

There are two fireplaces, one in the turret (perfect for keeping you warm during sunset) and another in the Palace Grounds.

We supply the firewood. Of course, any fires are subject to local fire restrictions.

How cold does it get?

Winter nights in the Ridge can get cold. There is no internal heating however we can fire up the generator for 3 hours each night so you can use the heating side of the split system air-conditioner. Our solar stored energy is not strong enough to run the heating system without the generator.
